This grassroots training webinar, “Queer the Vote: Taking Back our Democracy,” covers what groups can and can’t do around elections and how much much they can spend (with 501(c)3 funding); how to use existing resources to get people to the polls; and different strategies for how to target populations that have had lower turnout.

Birmingham Civil Rights Institute Revokes
Dr. Angela Davis Fred Shuttlesworth Award

Dr. Davis was going to be honored in February, however January 6, 2019 the BCRI board of directors, bowing to pressure primarily from the city’s Jewish community, voted to rescind the invitation and cancel its annual fund-raising gala. BLK Pearl is among the local group of civic, religious, legal, and business leaders announcing the reactivation of the Birmingham Committee for Truth and Reconciliation, which was originally organized in 1963. The revival of this committee includes people representing a diverse, inter-generational cross-section of city leaders.
